At our clinic Dr. Veronika is our resident veterinarian who practices equine services. Along with small animal services, her work focuses in basic equine services in emergency/urgent situations. Whether your horse is a foal, adult or senior, we can support you in caring for your horse’s wellness needs.
Dr. Veronika’s areas of focus in equine services include:
- Wound care
- Gastrointestinal issues
- Lameness diagnosis
- Eye care
- Preventative wellness (including vaccines and deworming)
- Diagnosing and treating hormonal diseases
- Basic dental care (without extractions)
- End of life care
One of the many benefits of working with Dr. Veronika and her equine services is our location in a rural and remote area of British Columbia. We understand that it can be challenging to have your horse seen depending on where you live or where your horse is boarded.
Referrals
In many of the equine cases we see, we are able to diagnosis, treat, and support you and your horse through their recovery. There are some cases where Dr. Veronika will work alongside other practicing equine veterinarians in order to ensure your horse is able to receive the best care. These cases may involve additional diagnostics that need to be performed, leading us to refer you to the right clinic to take those next important steps.
Making an Appointment
You can schedule an appointment with our equine veterinarian, by booking a house call (within certain location limits) or by booking a stall at the Selkirk Saddle Club. Please call the clinic to discuss scheduling an appointment, whether it’s for a wellness checkup or an illness/injury in an emergent situation. Out client care team will work with you and Dr. Veronika to ensure we schedule an appointment in a timely fashion based on your horses needs today.
By booking your horse in for an annual diagnostic and wellness checkup it can help reassure you that your horse is healthy or help us detect hidden diseases or conditions early. Early detection can improve the prognosis of many diseases, keep medical costs down, and help your horse live longer. Many horses are good at hiding signs that something is wrong, so subtle changes in their health or behavior might be easy to overlook. And, depending on the disease, some horses don’t show any symptoms.
Important Information regarding Wellness through All Life Stages
Horses age far quicker than humans, so it is even more crucial for our companion animals to receive regular exams. In addition, the risks of arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, hormone disorders, and kidney and liver problems all increase with age.
During your horse’s wellness exam, we will perform a physical assessment, checking your horse from nose to tail. We will also make sure your horse receives appropriate vaccinations and preventives. We will perform a diagnostic workup, which may include blood, fecal, and urine tests to check for parasites and underlying diseases. We may also recommend that your horse receive dental care. When your horse is nearing his or her senior years, we will recommend a baseline exam and diagnostic workup so we’ll know what’s normal for your horse. This will enable us to keep track of any changes.
Because you spend the most time with your horse, you are your horse’s expert, as well as his or her greatest advocate. Please let us know if you’ve noticed any physical or behavioral changes in your horse, as well as any other concerns you might have.
Call us today to schedule your horse’s exam! If you have any questions, we would be happy to discuss your horse’s needs and potentially schedule a consultation with Dr. Veronika.
