  • Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial urinary bladder infections. It is typically used as a second-line antibiotic, when broad-spectrum antibiotics have not cleared the infection. It is used “off label” or “extra label” in veterinary medicine. Nitrofurantoin comes in capsule or liquid forms given orally. Never use in food-producing animals or animals intended for food.

  • Neomycin sulfate, dexamethasone, and thiabendazole topical (brand name Tresaderm®) is a combination antimicrobial (neomycin), antifungal (thiabendazole), and steroid (dexamethasone) medication used to treat infections and inflammation of the skin, ears, and anal glands in cats and dogs. It may be used “off label” or “extra label” in other animals and for other conditions. Neomycin sulfate, dexamethasone, and thiabendazole topical comes in ointment form.

  • Molidustat (brand name Varenzin-CAI) is a medication used to treat anemia (low red blood cell number) in cats with chronic kidney disease. Molidustat helps increase red blood cell production. It is conditionally approved for use in cats only. It comes in liquid suspension form.

  • Miconazole otic is an antifungal used in the treatment of external ear infections (otitis externa) caused by fungal organisms in cats, dogs, and other animals. It may be specially compounded and/or combined into a formulation with other medications. Miconazole otic comes in ointment or liquid drop suspension forms that may be specially compounded.

  • Miconazole topical is an antifungal used in the treatment of skin infections caused by yeast in cats and dogs. It may be used “off-label” or “extra label” for other conditions and in other animals. It may be specially compounded and/or combined into a formulation with other medications. Miconazole topical comes in a variety of forms.

  • Milbemycin otic (brand name MilbeMite® Otic solution) is an antiparasitic used in the treatment of ear mite infestations in cats and kittens four weeks of age or older. Milbemycin otic comes in liquid drop form (in pre-measured ampules).

  • Florfenicol/ terbinafine/mometasone otic (brand names: Claro®, Simplera®) is a long-acting, topical ear medication used to treat the itching and inflammation associated with certain bacterial and/or ear infections in dogs. It is not intended for use in cats. This medication is usually given by veterinary personnel as a single dose.

  • Fluocinolone + acetonide DMSO (brand name Synotic®) is applied topically and is labeled to treat ear inflammation in dogs. It is also used off-label to treat ear infections in cats. Give as directed. Side effects are rare but may include temporary hearing loss or skin reactions. Do not use on pets allergic to corticosteroids or DMSO, on pets with a ruptured ear drum or pets that are pregnant.

  • Chlorhexidine/ketoconazole/TrizEDTA flush: topical (Mal-A-Ket® Plus) is a liquid antibacterial and antifungal solution used to manage localized bacterial and yeast infections in dogs and cats. It should only be used topically on the skin or in the ears.

  • Florfenicol/terbinafine/betamethasone otic (brand name Osurnia®) is a long-acting, topical ear medication used to treat the itching and inflammation associated with certain bacterial ear infections in dogs. It is labeled for use in dogs and not intended for use in cats. Florfenicol/terbinafine/betamethasone otic should only be administered by a veterinary professional.
