  • Ketamine (brand name Ketaset®) is an NMDA-receptor antagonist used to facilitate restraint/immobilization and to induce anesthesia for surgical procedures in cats, dogs, rabbits, rodents, birds, reptiles, and other animals. It may also be used for adjunctive pain control for post-surgical or chronic pain. It is labeled for use as a restraint and anesthetic agent in cats – all other uses are off label (extra label). Ketamine comes in an injectable form and is a controlled substance.

  • Ketoconazole is an antifungal given by mouth in the form of a tablet, used off label to treat fungal infections in dogs, cats, small mammals, and reptiles. The most common side effects are vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite, and weight loss. Do not use in pets that are allergic to it and use extreme caution when using in cats or pregnant pets.

  • Methionine (brand name Methio-Form) is a nutritional supplement used to make urine more acidic in cats and dogs. Urine acidifiers help manage certain types of urolithiasis (urinary stones). Methionine comes in gel, chewable, powder, and tablet forms. Monitor urine pH and seek immediate veterinary care if signs of Heinz-body anemia appear in cats (pale gums, red-brown urine, weakness).

  • Pyrethrins + piperonyl butoxide + bicycloheptene dicarboximide otic (brand name Otomite Plus®) is a medication used to treat ear mites in dogs and cats older than 12 weeks of age. Pyrethrins + piperonyl butoxide + bicycloheptene dicarboximide otic comes in a liquid drop form. It is highly toxic to aquatic species and toxic to cats if ingested.

  • Hydrocortisone otic is a steroid medication used to treat topical inflammation of the ears in pets. It is often combined with antibiotics and comes as a liquid solution applied within the ear canal.

  • Torsemide, also known as UpCard®CA-1, is a diuretic used to remove excess fluid (water) from the body. It is used in conditions such as heart disease and lung disease. It is conditionally approved by the FDA for use in dogs only. Torsemide comes in an oral liquid suspension form.

  • Molidustat (brand name Varenzin-CAI) is a medication used to treat anemia (low red blood cell number) in cats with chronic kidney disease. Molidustat helps increase red blood cell production. It is conditionally approved for use in cats only. It comes in liquid suspension form.

  • Dimenhydrinate (brand names: Dramamine®, Gravol®, Travtabs®, Driminate®, Triptone®) is an antihistamine used to prevent motion sickness and to treat nausea, especially in dogs with vestibular disease. It has also been used for its sedative properties and to reduce itchiness associated with allergies.

  • Afoxolaner is a chewable tablet used to treat and prevent flea and tick infestations in dogs. It has also been used off-label to treat certain types of mange and mites.

  • Azithromycin (brand name Zithromax® or Zmax®) is a broad spectrum antibiotic used for a variety of infections in dogs and cats. It is also used for certain infections in horses, cattle, rabbits, guinea pigs, and birds. Azithromycin is given by mouth or injection.
